Niagara Falls for the Active Traveller
Most visitors arrive expecting to stand at a railing and marvel at the falls — and that experience alone is worth the trip. But Niagara Falls and the surrounding region offers a surprisingly rich menu of adventure and outdoor activities that can fill multiple days for active travellers.
Whitewater Jet Boat Tours
This is arguably the most exhilarating thing you can do at Niagara that doesn't involve standing near the edge of the falls. Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours launches from both Niagara-on-the-Lake (Canadian side) and Lewiston (American side), sending passengers in purpose-built jet boats directly into the Class 5 and 6 rapids of the Niagara Gorge downstream from the falls.
Two experiences are offered: a wet boat (you will get completely soaked — bring a change of clothes) and a covered jet dome option for those who want the thrill without the drenching. The whirlpool section of the gorge is genuinely dramatic, and the speed and agility of the boats in the churning water is remarkable. Minimum age and weight restrictions apply.
WildPlay Niagara Falls — Zip Line to the Falls
Operated from the Canadian side, WildPlay's signature experience is a zip line that launches riders over the Niagara Gorge toward the base of Horseshoe Falls at speeds up to 70 km/h. The line runs 670 metres and puts you at eye level with the mist and thunder of the falls. It's a genuinely unique perspective that even people who've visited Niagara many times find jaw-dropping.
WildPlay also operates ropes courses and aerial park elements at the same site, making it a good full-afternoon activity for groups with mixed thrill tolerances.
Niagara Gorge Hiking
Often overlooked by first-time visitors, the Niagara Gorge contains some of the most dramatic hiking terrain in Ontario. The Niagara Gorge Trail System on the Canadian side offers routes ranging from easy paved walks to serious scrambles down into the gorge itself. The Great Gorge Adventure boardwalk takes you to the water's edge beside the Class 6 Niagara rapids — some of the most powerful and dangerous whitewater in the world.
On the American side, Niagara Falls State Park offers gorge trails including the rewarding hike to Devil's Hole State Park, where a series of switchback stairs descend into the gorge beside the whirlpool rapids.
Cycling the Niagara Parkway
The 56-kilometre paved recreation trail running alongside the Niagara Parkway from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the finest cycling routes in Ontario. It passes through farmland, vineyards, orchards, historic sites, and some of the most scenic river terrain in the region. Bike rentals are available at several points along the route, and the trail is well-suited to leisure cyclists — mostly flat with gentle grades.
A popular option is cycling the falls-to-NOTL section (approximately 25 km one way) and returning by shuttle or taxi. Several operators offer guided cycling tours of the wine country that combine riding with winery visits.
Helicopter Tours
For a complete aerial perspective, helicopter tours depart from both the Canadian and American sides. A typical flight lasts 9–12 minutes and covers the entire falls complex, the gorge, and the surrounding landscape. It's not cheap, but the views are unmatched and photographs from above the falls are extraordinary. Multiple operators compete in this space, so compare prices and departure locations before booking.
Rock Climbing and Via Ferrata
The Niagara Escarpment — the ancient limestone ridge that the Niagara River cuts through — offers rock climbing and via ferrata routes at various points along its length. While not directly at the falls, sites within an hour's drive (including areas near Hamilton and the Bruce Peninsula) provide excellent technical climbing on the same geological formation responsible for the falls themselves.
